4th and King Trackwork http://www.centralsubwayblog.com/blog/2015/09/4th-and-king-trackwork/ http://www.centralsubwayblog.com/blog/2015/09/4th-and-king-trackwork/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2015 00:02:48 +0000 http://www.centralsubwayblog.com/blog/?p=7024 A portion of the new track interchange at the intersection of 4th and King was installed over Labor Day weekend.

A portion of the new track interchange at the intersection of 4th and King was installed over Labor Day weekend.

The Labor Day Weekend was a busy one for the Central Subway Construction Crew.  While many residents enjoyed the final weekend of summer relaxing at the beach or the park, traveling out of town, or attending the Billy Joel concert, our team worked around the clock at the intersection of 4th and King as part of the construction of the future 4th and Brannan surface Station.

The work began at 7p.m. Friday, September 4th and ended at 5a.m. Tuesday, September 8th.  Trackwork, infrastructure and signal priority upgrades were installed at the intersection of 4th and King.   These upgrades accommodate the future Central Subway alignment and will make transit safer and more reliable.  When the work was over, trains were tested to confirm success.

The Labor Weekend Construction completion was a major milestone towards the completion of the Central Subway.   There’s more to come.   The work at 4th and King was the first phase of a two-phased construction project.   The intersection of 4th and King was shutdown re-routing public transportation and drivers around the work. People used Barry St. and Townsend St. as alternate routes. We can expect a very similar shutdown for the 2nd phase of the project.

More upgrades and track will be installed, with an exciting twist.   After completion, the San Francisco public will see the straight line of track that will lead to the new Central Subway Alignment.   Currently, the T Third curves at 4th and King, the new tracks will go straight towards the 4th and Brannan surface station.   When the entire Central Subway is completed, T Third trains will go straight from 4th and Brannan towards the Yerba Buena | Moscone, Union Square | Market Street and Chinatown underground stations.

The Central Subway Team would like to thank our neighbors and merchants for their patience and cooperation during Labor Day Weekend.    Train travel and traffic were affected.    This construction will benefit the community greatly when revenue operations begin in 2019.   Transportation from SoMA to Chinatown will only be 8 minutes when the Central Subway is complete.  BART and other Muni lines will be easily assessable from the T Third.
