The Chinese Historical Society of America and Students from the Chinatown YMCA contributed artwork for the building wrap design that promoted the future entrance to the Chinatown Subway Station.

Toward the end of 2013, building demolition was completed and heavy equipment moved in to begin excavation work.

Upon completion of the station roof in spring 2015, the Contractor’s next phase of work includes restoration of Washington Street and interior work of the Chinatown Station.

Their trek was commemorated in different ways:

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee toured the beginnings of the tunneling project.

MAYOR LEE IN TUNNEL

The Mayor signed Tunnel Boring Machine Mom Chung at the onset of her 1.7 mile journey across San Francisco.

Last year, the two TBMs completed their journey under the streets of San Francisco.  Staff poses at the completed end point known as the retrieval shaft.
